Beauty, lightness, modernity. Three keys words that can always define the poetry behind every Valentino couture show. Once more, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli do not deceive. I love how the standing ovation at the end of each show is becoming natural, a necessity, something the audience simply looks forward to. This time, the creative directors were inspired by the figure of Mariano Fortuny, the archemist who “manipulates light in order to fix eternity”, somewhere between the classic Occident and the Byzantine world.
For Spring/Summer 2016, the creative directors started with a celebration of the body. I loved seeing the models walking in such a light way, making us feel they were flying. Everything about their gestures suggested freedom, individuality and a direct earthly contact; which was strongly apparent with the models walking barefoot (amazing!!). The woman is freed, she escapes tradition for progress, for modernity. The striking note is how we still felt throughout the show that the Valentino woman is eternal.
Looking closer at the work, the return to nature can be interpreted through the touches on velvets, the handmade pleats, the patchwork made of opulent weaving and the hand-painted volutes. Orientalism appeared through the kimono style coats, the capes and the painted dragon patterns. I loved the delicate colors going from shades of green, to red, white and black.
I find it so beautiful how this show, in every single detail, made us feel this sentiment of emancipation. From the way the models walked the runway barefoot to the lightness of the fabrics, the delicate transparencies, the work on the velvet, the Oriental patterns and the music (and what a series of heart-stopping soundtracks), everything looked more than perfect to me. Through my blog, I constantly focus on the theme of women empowerment and in my opinion, there’s nothing more beautiful than a fashion house that is able to reinterpret the woman throughout design. Yes, in a world where everything is going so fast, we want to be freed from cages yet re-establish a strong connection with the earth.
