Many heart-stopping, visually delectable trends have graced the winter catwalks in Paris, Milan, London and New York this season, and one of our hand-down favorites is the galactic trend. Inspired by stars, science fiction and faraway galaxies, the galactic trend found its way onto the dresses, tops, shoes and bags of some of winter’s edgiest collections.
But what exactly is the galactic trend? Think Star Wars and the pulp sci-fi flicks of the ‘60s, like Jane Fonda’s Barbarella. Spaceships, sci-fi comic villains, shooting stars, the silvery glow of the moon on a clear night and the endless expanses of the Milky Way all somehow showed up on this winter’s key pieces.
Over at 3.1 Phillip Lim, you can get your hands on a zip-up dress that glows with gold, silver and purple stars. Or you can opt for a similar-looking top and pair it with a simple back-and-white skirt. Another American designer, Diana von Furstenberg, reinvented her iconic wrap dress and introduced a flowing gown adorned with stars and leaving the chest almost totally bare.
A stunning dress that elevates the galactic trend to sheer, unabashed glamour comes courtesy of British designer Matthew Williamson, who seems to channel an infinite galaxy with his show-stopping piece. Parisian brand IRO adorns a funky zip-up jacket with stars and spaceship insignia, while British label Preen turns Star Wars villain Darth Vader into a fashion hero by adding his memorable face to various dresses and tops.
Accessories have also embraced the galactic trend. Stella McCartney showcases edgy bags and shoes that explode with fabulous star designs, while Sylvia Toledano adorns her delicious clutches with shiny, glittery shooting stars.
So what are you waiting for? Fly out into space. Land on the moon. Escape to the end of the universe on a space shuttle. Just make sure you’re wearing the right sci-fi, inter-galactic outfit.
Love this contribution. Thank you Michele. We can’t wait for more!
